The DNA grandparent test is recommended for situations where the alleged father/parent is not available for testing. The DNA grandparent test will provide the likelihood that an alleged grandmother or grandfather is the true biological grandparent of a child. This test is usually ordered by grandparents wishing to determine whether their son is the true biological father of their grandchild but their son (the alleged father) is deceased or unavailable to take the DNA paternity test.

Important! Please note that the DNA grandparent test is not as powerful as a DNA paternity test/parentage test.

If the alleged parent(s) in question is/are available for testing, we highly recommend the paternity test or maternity test over the DNA grandparent test. The DNA paternity and maternity tests will always provide absolutely conclusive results. The DNA grandparent test should only be chosen if the parent in question absolutely cannot be tested. If you decide to proceed with a grandparent test in order to find out whether an alleged father is the true biological father of a child, we highly recommend adding the child's biological mother to the grandparent test in order to increase the power of the test. The DNA grandparent test results will provide a likelihood that a grandmother or grandfather is the true biological grandparent of a child. If both the grandmother and grandfather are available for testing, the laboratory will additional perform a reconstruction study (try to reconstruct the alleged father's profile using his parent's DNA) and this may provide a more conclusive result than testing only one grandparent.

Private Grandparent Test Option

The Private Grandparent test is for families wishing to take the test discreetly for non-legal use. If you choose a Private Knowledge Grandparent test, discreet collection kits containing buccal (mouth) swabs will be delivered to your address for simple, painless sample collection. The samples are collected by rubbing the provided swabs inside the mouth along the cheek and then sent back to the laboratory for analysis. Results will be available 3 to 5 business days from the date the samples are received at the laboratory.

"Split Kit" option for families who do not live in the same city

If the individuals to be tested live in different cities, or even different countries, we can split the kit and send each component to a different address. Since the kits are individually barcoded, the samples will still be tested together even if the are sent back separately. To order a split kit, please write the following into the comments box of the online order form "Please split kit". Please also indicate the name and address to send each component. For example, please state "send the Grandmother's portion to... (specify the grandmother's name and address)" and "send the Grandchild's portion to... (specify the grandchild's name and address).

Legal Grandparent Test Option

The Legal Grandparent Test is for individuals who need to receive legally admissible documents for use in court. Legal grandparent testing requires a chain-of-custody procedure to be followed during sample collection by an unbiased third party collector/collection site. If you choose the legal test, you cannot collect the samples yourself. You will need to attend an appointment for chain-of-custody sample collection. This ensures proper witnessing, verification of identification and fingerprinting of the individuals involved in the test. Results will be available 3 to 5 business days from the date the samples are received at the laboratory.

How do I proceed with DNA grandparent testing?

To proceed with DNA grandparent testing, select the test option from the order list above. If you select the private DNA grandparent test option, a private kit will be sent to you immediately for sample collection. If you select the legal DNA grandparent test option, you can choose to arrange your own chain-of-custody sample collection or you can choose to have your samples collected at one of our hundreds of collection locations nation wide.
